In anticipation of a vaccine for SARS-CoV-2, the American Medical Association (AMA) and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) created new codes for the vaccine and its administration. This code structure was developed to facilitate efficient claims processing for any COVID-19 vaccines and monoclonal antibody infusions that receive FDA Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) approval. Most of these codes are not currently effective and not all codes will be used. CMS will issue specific code descriptors in the future. Effective dates for the codes for Medicare purposes will coincide with FDA EUA or approval. For more information from the AMA, please click here.
